Two artists to debut at Anita Peghini-Räber Gallery Oct. 10

October 9, 2015

"The West is obsessed with time. How would our perception and goals change if we were to be defined by our pace?" asks Taiwan born Katherine Chang Liu, whose work encourages everyone to pace life, to return to introspection, examine the past, and just to slow down.

Patience is one of Katherine's favorite words. How can that be? Chang Liu’s persona emanates 1,000 volts of energy. The petite woman is highly intelligent and filled with joy de vivre. She balances the paradox beautifully. Chang Liu a studio artist teacher, curator and juror with the background of a scientist at Berkeley University. She bridges the East with the West, science and art, left brain and right brain, complexity and simplicity, finished and unfinished gracefully and with assurance.  "If you pay attention to your personality, the kind of art you make reflects it," Chang Liu shares. In recent years her work often has come from her reading. Words lead to ideas.

Sometimes a word or two will trigger the imagination enough to create a series. “My painting process is a process of addition and subtraction, during which I try to edit the image down to only what is needed: poetic, mystical, and cerebral in its effect." Liu's painting/collages have a component beyond expressionistic marking: they are resolutions of her Eastern heritage and Western training. Chang Liu's art is collected in over 1,100 public, corporate and private collections. Anita Peghini-Räber is representing the L.A.-based artist on the East Coast at 49 Baltimore Ave. in Rehoboth Beach.

“My ideas about art are simple. Understanding comes from experience. I didn’t choose my subject but rather allowed myself to be inspired by the landscape I’ve lived in all my life. It’s that simple," says Tim Bell. Bell is a painter in the American Impressionist tradition. He is a native of Maryland. Bell is a true plein-air artist who adores the beauty in nature. Sometimes the athletic former Marine hikes for many miles through nature to find that pristine place he was longing for. He creates from his guts in the moment, very spontaneous, in rythmic expression. The body, spirit and mind are all included. Bell is shifting more and more towards abstract expressionism. He hints at reality, but moreover he loves to transform color and shape into something new. Bell indulges in the joy of creating patterns of colors and shapes.

Bell graduated from Frostburg State University with a degree in fine arts with post-graduate studies at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts in Annapolis, Md., and the Cape Cod School of Art in Provincetown, Mass. His paintings hang in private collections across the United States, the U.K., Italy, and in the permanent collection of Frostburg State University. Bell lives on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and has received many national awards.
